PreK mathematics focuses on introducing young children (ages 3-5) to foundational math concepts through play-based, hands-on activities. It emphasizes developing number sense, spatial awareness, and problem-solving skills in a developmentally appropriate way. Key areas include:

  1. Number Sense: Recognizing numbers, counting objects (up to 10 or 20), understanding one-to-one correspondence, and comparing quantities (more/less).
  2. Shapes and Spatial Relationships: Identifying basic shapes (circle, square, triangle), describing positions (above, below, beside), and exploring patterns.
  3. Measurement: Comparing sizes, lengths, or weights using non-standard units (e.g., "this block is longer than that one").
  4. Patterns and Sorting: Recognizing, creating, and extending simple patterns (e.g., red-blue-red-blue) and sorting objects by attributes (color, size).
  5. Problem-Solving: Engaging in simple puzzles, games, or activities that encourage logical thinking and reasoning.
Instruction will involves songs, stories, manipulatives (e.g., blocks, counters), and group activities to make learning engaging. The goal is to build confidence and curiosity about math, preparing children for kindergarten concepts like addition, subtraction, and more complex patterns.
